Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday morning that Facebook has reached one billion active users.

“If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life,” said Mark on his Facebook Timeline post.

Facebook’s milestone comes after they hit the 500 million mark in July 2010 and tapped nearly half of the world’s internet users by October of this year, which accounts for around 2.5 billion people.

“Most of them — 81 percent — live outside of the U.S. and Canada,” according to USA Today. “Many of them log in on mobile devices rather than personal computers, and the company now has 600 million mobile users.”

Congratulations Facebook!
