After Joseph Kony and his rebel army terrorized northern Uganda, many women like Mend’s Akulu Nancy struggled to support themselves and their families. But now she has reason to smile. With the money Nancy has made from Mend, she has been able to make a number of investments. She pays for school fees and uniforms for her children and has put some of her siblings through school. Nancy has also purchased two bicycles and invested in land and a home for her parents to live in. She learned best practices in savings and investment through Mend, but made these strategic decisions on her own. To us at Invisible Children, this is empowerment.
