At Invisible Children HQ, we talk a lot about “the big why” – the purpose that drives our organization and the way we approach our mission of ending LRA violence. We have a few core values that guide our work, make us think, and challenge us to grow. Read on for a glimpse of what makes us who we are.

What makes a good leader? Our CEO Ben Keesey says, “You must stay humble.”

Humble people are more focused on the mission than themselves. They work for results, not for credit. Humility is essential to teamwork – it’s the willingness to ask for help or admit that you don’t know the answer. It’s collaboration, sharing ideas, and working well as a team. It’s avoiding pride when you’re in the spotlight. And it absolutely means having strength and conviction.

The most powerful quality you can have is humble confidence. It keeps you genuine, and it earns respect. It’s important to trust yourself, because you are capable of more than you think. The best people to work with are confident in their abilities and humble in their accomplishments.

We can’t stop the LRA on our own. We’ve partnered with so many people to accomplish what we have. All our supporters spread awareness, raise funds, and advocate for our government’s involvement in the conflict. International political leaders have collaborated to come against LRA forces, and we have worked with other nonprofit organizations on the ground to support the protection and recovery of affected communities. We’ve never been in this alone.

Everything our staff produces is a team effort, and without everyone’s voice and ideas coming together, our work wouldn’t be the same. We take our attitudes just as seriously as our qualifications. We think that no matter where you’re at, if you’re working in that balance of humbleness and confidence, you’re doing all right.
