Over the past few weeks, the situation in LRA-affected areas has been relatively calm. Despite a recent resurgence of violence in the south of the Central African Republic (CAR), there have not been as many reported incidents, looting or attacks in the northern part of the country. While this is a welcome respite for the communities that live with the constant fear of being attacked, it does not mean that the LRA is going away anytime soon.

Last Saturday, six suspected LRA forces ambushed two motorcyclists on Kanango mountain near Mboki, in the northeastern part of CAR.

The assailants blocked the motorcyclists by encircling them. The motorcyclists abandoned their vehicle and fled, but they were pursued by one of the assailants for a few meters. Thankfully, the two civilians were able to escape; however, the assailants looted all the belongings they had been transporting: cassava, onions, a carpet, a blanket, and the motorcycle battery. They then threw the motorcycle in the bush.

This same group reportedly abducted a fisherman as they were crossing the Mbomou river. The fisherman counted 57 men and 3 women among the assailants, who also looted his possessions and broke his boat before letting him go.

Looting is a serious problem that alters the lives of thousands, especially in vulnerable communities. Despite the progress that has been made against the LRA in recent years, civilians remain at risk and attacks persist.
