Schools for Schools began in 2006 as a response to the poor condition of many schools following the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict. Invisible Children linked schools around the world together with our 11 partner schools in northern Uganda. Rather than thinking of the conflict as something that was too far away or difficult to understand, our supporters cared deeply and they showed it.
You mobilized your energy and resources to take action to help northern Uganda’s students get back to school. And, by now, we have made a lot of progress. Here is a look at a few of our partner schools during the S4S construction process and what they look like now.
Gulu Senior Secondary School: Key projects at Gulu SS include a two-story multipurpose hall that can hold up to 1,000 students at a time and new science laboratories.
Keyo Secondary School: At Keyo, money raised for S4S was invested in the construction and furnishing of two classroom blocks and a brand new science lab slated to be commissioned early this year.
Sacred Heart Secondary School: A three-story classroom block completed by Invisible Children and Schools for Schools is the focal point of Sacred Heart’s campus. The first story was funded by the Japanese government, but a lack of funding halted the project until IC stepped in. The building was officially opened in 2013.
Saint Joseph’s College Layibi: Saint Joseph’s College Layibi received a facelift with the help of S4S. The school’s head teacher believes that beautification of the campus and improvement of its structures has created a learning environment where students are really thriving.
Occupied, damaged or displaced during the conflict, countless schools lacked the infrastructure needed to support a productive learning environment for their students. Now, in 2014, we are excited to say that we’ve invested millions of dollars, built over 150 structures and raised the standards of these schools to benefit generations of student leaders to come.
