On Monday, April 21, a UPDF (Ugandan People Defense Force) contingent of the AU-RTF (African Union Regional Task Force) captured LRA Lieutenant Charles Okello.
Lt. Okello is a long standing mid-level LRA fighter who has been with the LRA since at least the 1990’s when the LRA war was still devastating northern Uganda. In the mid-1990’s he was detailed to be a part of Joseph Kony’s security team—a position within in the LRA where fighters are often groomed to become commanders. Following his assignment on Kony’s security detail, he became an officer and served under multiple LRA commanders until finally being assigned to Senior LRA Commander Okello Johnson “Palutaka”. Most recently, Lt. Charles Okello is believed to have been operating around Nzako and Yalinga in the Central African Republic.
We are encouraged by the removal of this LRA leader from the battlefield as local, regional, and international actors continue to work for peace in LRA-affected areas in central Africa. We will keep you updated as we learn more about Lt. Okello and the 10 LRA abductees that were rescued during his capture.
