Rubangkene Erick joined the Legacy Scholarship Program in 2013 when he was entering Senior 4. He came to Gulu Secondary School to complete his A Levels, an important step for entering university. Erick, now in Senior 6, plans to sit for exams at the end of term three with the hopes of entering university and pursuing the career path of his choice.

“Education is important in many ways,” he says. “It can help you access jobs, achieve more and do what you want with your life.”

Erick’s dream is to take advantage of the education he has received in order to become a teacher. He is interested in teaching mathematics to secondary school students.

He believes that the fact that many people had limited access to education during the conflict has limited growth in northern Uganda, and he says investing in education can make an enormous difference. The investment of key parties – like teachers, donors and organizations across the region who support students to attend schools – as well as the investment of the students themselves will continue to improve Uganda for the future.

“During the war, it was so hard to walk every day to night commute or walk to school from far when it was not safe. Now, we are able to take more advantage of the opportunities that given,” he said.

Because peace became possible in Uganda, so did planning for the future.

We agree wholeheartedly, and we’re empowering students in northern Uganda to create a better future. Support our Legacy Scholarship Program so students like Erick can finish school and become leaders in their communities.
