Our communications department just got a new addition. We couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to our newest communication intern. Apparently she used to go by “Queen Arthur” in fifth grade – but now she says we can just call her Liz.  She’s also an up-and-coming sociologist who loves the rain and names her pets after Star Wars characters. You’ll be seeing more of her fabulous writing skills on the blog, so we’ll let her kick things off from here.

I’ve been telling stories since I was four years old. In first grade, I won my first ever writing contest; in high school, I created a photo blog; in college, I traveled and took videos around the world. In short, I love going to new places, taking note of what I see, and sharing it in creative ways with friends and family. (I’m also obsessed with hearing others’ stories – I’m an avid documentary watcher, a total TV junkie, and an obsessive-compulsive bookworm.)

When “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” was screened at my high school, I was captivated by these children’s stories and by the powerful way in which the filmmakers shared it. I was also shocked that such a devastating conflict was ripping Uganda apart – and that hardly anyone knew about it. I found myself wanting to get involved in some way, but not being quite sure how to go about it. After all, I was just a boringly mundane high school student from Seattle with no experience whatsoever in the realms of activism or international aid.

Years later, after graduating from Pepperdine University with a degree in Sociology, I remained on the lookout for ways in which I could combine my passions for writing and storytelling with my knowledge of people and social justice. When I saw that Invisible Children was hiring interns, the light bulb above my head lit up. What a perfect way to do the things I loved while simultaneously fighting against some of the worst injustice the world has ever seen.

The rest, as you can probably guess, is history. Invisible Children is an amazing organization filled to the brim with kind, dedicated, and incredibly brave people, all determined to make a difference and to tell the stories of those whose voices aren’t being heard. Working here is truly a dream come true for me, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
