FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAN DIEGO, CA, November 19, 2012 –Invisible Children, an organization that raised worldwide awareness about indicted war criminal Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in the documentary KONY 2012, announces the release of a series of financial documents from Fiscal Year 2012, beginning with its Form 990. The release of the full audited financial statements and the annual report will follow, as those documents become available.
Invisible Children focuses exclusively on bringing a permanent end to LRA atrocities through a unique four-part model that addresses the problem in its entirety; from immediate needs to long-term effects. In Fiscal Year 2012, as part of this comprehensive model, Invisible Children spent 81.48% of its expenses on media, mobilization, protection, and recovery programs; 12.99% on administration and management costs; and 5.53% on direct fundraising.
“We are humbled and grateful to everyone who has supported Invisible Children this year and in the nine years that came before. We are excited by the milestones and progress made in 2012 and for the continued support of our life-saving programs,” said Ben Keesey, Invisible Children CEO. “These funds will allow us to continue to share awareness media for free, mobilize youth in global activism, sustain programs that enable the war-affected communities to better protect themselves and help recover the region with rehabilitation, education and micro economic initiatives. Because of this historic fundraising year, Invisible Children has more than doubled its funding for its protection and recovery programs.”
Subsequent to the release of KONY 2012, significant progress has been made in the pursuit of Joseph Kony. The last eight months have seen the most global attention on the LRA in its 26-year history. In March, the African Union announced that, with the support of the United Nations, it would take leadership alongside the Ugandan military in the quest to capture Kony. A Congressional hearing in April marked the first time that a victim of the LRA testified in front of U.S. Congress. That same month, U.S. President Barack Obama announced the extension of the deployment of U.S. military advisors who are helping regional governments track down Kony and improve the protection of civilians. In May, Ugandan forces captured Ceasar Acellam, one of the top five commanders in the LRA and, in June, the United Nations Security Council approved the first-ever comprehensive strategy to address the LRA crisis. Forty-seven U.S. Senators and 76 Representatives have co-sponsored a resolution supporting the effort against the LRA.
