INTERNATIONAL PROGRESS // KEY MILESTONES THAT HAPPENED AFTER THE PREMIERE OF KONY 2012

In April 2012President Obama recommitted the American special forces and authorized more resources for their efforts to track and arrest Kony.

In June 2012, the UN Security Council held a meeting on the LRA and produced a regional strategy to address the LRA crisesAfter the release of KONY 2012, the UN envoy to the region declared, “Never before have we seen the [UN] Security Council, the African Union, the affected countries, donor partners, NGOs, religious leaders, students, and the wider international community — including yourselves — speak with one voices on such an important issue.”

In December 2012Congress passed legislation that called for continued support of the US advisor mission against the LRA and authorized $50 million to help strengthen efforts to locate and arrest top LRA commanders.

In January 2013, Congress passed new legislation authorizing a reward of up to $5 million for information that leads to the arrest of Joseph Kony.

These new resources have helped produce major gains in the fight to stop the LRA:
– Killings of civilians dropped 67% from 2011 to 2012
– 2 of the top 5 commanders of the LRA have been removed from the battlefield
– Reportedly, more LRA fighters defected in 2012 than the previous three years combined
FOR THE SAKE OF KNOWLEDGE, KEY TERMS SURROUNDING THE KONY 2012 CAMPAIGN #ICexpert

KONY 2012 – A yearlong campaign launched by Invisible Children Inc. which centered around the horrific crimes of African warlord, Joseph Kony, and his Lord’s Resistance Army. The film set out to make Joseph Kony famous – not to celebrate him but to bring his crimes to light and set a precedent for international justice. Launched on March 5th, 2012, KONY 2012 ended up becoming the most viral video in history with 100+ million views in less than one week.

Joseph Kony – The infamous warlord from northern Uganda that has led the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in abducting, killing, and displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians in East and central Africa for the past 27 years. The LRA was active in Uganda from 1987-2006. Since then the LRA has been attacking communities in Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan.

Scam – Invisible Children isn’t a scam. We’re not even sure what that means. Financial statements from the last 6 years are always available on invisiblechildren.com, and the Annual Report from 2012 is there in all its glory.

Jason Russell – Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Invisible Children. He was the narrator of KONY 2012. He was diagnosed with Brief Reactive Psychosis in March 2012 after a suffering a public breakdown. He is healthy and back at work.

Jacob Acaye – The three IC founders/filmmakers met Jacob in northern Uganda in 2003 and promised they would do everything they could to help end the war; Invisible Children was founded in 2004 to fulfill that promise.

KONY 2012 Part II: Beyond Famous – The follow-up film to answer many of the public’s most critical questions after the release of KONY 2012.

Cover the Night – On April 20, 2012, Invisible Children called on international supporters to get involved in a local community service project, and then cover their streets with KONY 2012 posters in order to “make Joseph Kony famous.”

MOVE:DC – On November 17, 2012, thousands of IC supporters gathered in Washington DC to attend the Global Summit on the LRA where they were challenged by world leaders, policy experts, and inspirational speakers to keep fighting the good fight. Supporters then marched through the streets of DC before ending the evening with a massive dance party called Global Dance Night.

LOBBY:DC – A day of advocacy that preceded MOVE:DC. Invisible Children supporters were trained and then executed hundreds of lobby meetings on Capitol Hill with their elected local representatives. This day was extremely successful in fast-tracking the future signing of the Rewards for Justice into law in January 2013.

Caesar Achellam – A high-ranking LRA commander who was captured by Ugandan forces in May 2012. He was the oldest member of the LRA and one of the top five commanders in terms of influence and authority. He was captured along with two women and a child. Since his capture he has been recording radio messages that encourage other members of the LRA to surrender.

Rewards for Justice – The Rewards for Justice program, established in 1984, gives the Secretary of State the authority to offer a reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of anyone who plans, commits, or attempts international terrorist acts. The expanded law allows the State Department to publicize and pay rewards for information about the world’s most serious human rights abusers who are wanted by any international criminal tribunal for war crimes or genocide (like Joseph Kony and his top commanders.)
