Our second-annual Fourth Estate Leadership Summit is fast approaching. We’re beyond excited to have 1,400 young activists and educators from all over the world gather at the UCLA campus this August to interact with experts and innovators in the fields of film, business, journalism, economics, and international justice. This meeting of minds will bring together organizations and leaders who believe that basic human rights should be a priority for us all. It will be a beautiful thing, indeed.
Speaking of beautiful, when the Art + Film Department met to conceptualize for the upcoming Summit, our Lead Graphic Designer Tyler Fordham knocked it out of the park with his design ideas. Here’s what he had to say about the method behind the mastery:
The aesthetic for this years Fourth Estate Summit stems from the idea that all humanity is connected and united under the same tribe. We are united as one people. I wanted to create a look that was clearly influenced by tribal patterns but not have it tie back to any specific people group or region. I also wanted it to feel fresh and original while also tied to meaning. The process turned out to be very organic and several collaborations came together to create a variety of patterns.
All of the assets that are being used for the event have been strategically designed, and watching our design team execute it all has been a lesson in creativity, patience, and teamwork. Below are glimpses of the initial ideas that turned into all that you will see at the Summit in August.
This first pattern was created by combining streak marks painted on a piece of balsa wood:
Our motion graphics department cut apart and arranged pieces of the title font we are using into a pattern:
The idea here was to take a charcoal sketch version of the liberty triangle and replicate it into a pattern.
This pattern was based off of a symbol that IC’s web designer Steve Witmer created:
