For Gulu Secondary School and Lacor Secondary School, winning the annual inter-school volleyball tournament in March this year was not the end. In fact, it was more like the beginning of their journey to victory. These two Gulu District victor teams had to defend their titles by facing Pader’s winning teams: the girls from Pajule Secondary School and the boys from Patongo Secondary School. The top teams from both districts faced off at the Legacy Scholarship Program’s inter-district volleyball tournament in Pader.
Yet again, Gulu SS and Lacor SS won the tournament, taking with them the trophies for the girls and boys categories respectively.
“I am glad that my school has won,” says Douglas the sports team captain of Lacor SS, who also plays basketball and soccer. He also talked about how sports help him to be a better student. “I find no difficulty balancing sports with academics. I first go for sports, that way I am fresh and can easily understand and grasp a lot in my studies.”
The tournament also served as a location for a blood bank during a time when the country’s hospitals are being faced a blood shortage. So as the volleyballs flew through the air, fans could split their time between watching the tournament and participating in the noble cause of donating blood to the Uganda Red Cross Society.
At the tournament, spectators were also treated to traditional dance presentations by the young talented pupils of Kalongo Primary School. By the end, all participants had received certifications of participation while the winning schools got sports jerseys for each of their players.
The Legacy Scholarship Program provides scholarships for secondary and university students in northern Uganda. In addition to mentoring, the Legacy Scholarship Program team also provides extracurricular activities like volleyball and debate to develop well-rounded students.
