HomevisitsMentoring is a vital aspect of our Legacy Scholarship Program. Mentors are a great link between a student, their parents, the school and Invisible Children Uganda. How do mentors do this?  They conduct home and school visits to assess the progress of the student both in their academic and social lives. School visits are done when schools are in session, while home visits are conducted when students are on holidays.

Home visits are special in that they do not only focus on the academic performance of the student, but also brings the parents on board.  When Invisible Children Uganda offers a scholarship to needy students, the focus is not to take over the role of the parent, but instead encourage the parents to get involved in whatever ways they can.

“When my child was offered a scholarship, I was so happy because now I was guaranteed that my child will have a better future than I,” said the father of Claire, an LSP student. His happiness, however, did not come without fears. “I thought my child would under look me because I have been unable to support her financially, however with the visits from Invisible Children, I have realized that as a parent I can still play a great role in my child’s education without necessarily paying her fees.”

Claire is one of the 119 students in their first year of secondary school to receive a scholarship this year. This week, her mentor visited her home to talk to her parents about academic performance, health and how to succeed both at home and in school.
