Has anyone ever told you that if you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life? But then you get a job, and while you love it, it still definitely feels like work? Then get ready to go purchase the book I’m about to discuss because it will shake your world. Conveniently, that’s (sorta) the name of the book.
Shake the World: It’s Not About Finding a Job, It’s About Creating a Life is a blueprint for young people entering the job market. Author James Marshall Reilly shares practical advice he gathered from interviews with some of today’s brightest business and nonprofit leaders: Tony Hsieh (Zappos), Blake Mycoskie (TOMS), Shawn Fanning (Napster), and some guy named Jason Russell (Invisible Children). What they all have in common is that they define themselves not by money and title but by fulfillment and happiness. Ugh, so refreshing.
“When we come out of school, we’ve been told by our parents or our peers or our guidance counselors that there’s this traditional path. You go to college, you major in something and you immediately go into or try to go into a field that has something to do with your major,” says Reilly. “I think if we reframe risk as taking these little chances, making these little bets, that’s the way to do it. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”
So if you need some insight, encouragement, and practical advice in creating a life and career that will redefine what success looks like to you (or your parents), James Marshall Reilly has what you need.
Originally published in hardcover in 2011, it is now making a comeback in paperback. Oh, and Kindle. All versions available here.
