“My stories always affect the community,” Eric Otim explains. “My education helps me come up with good angles that will make people think about the issues.”
Eric is a university graduate of the Legacy Scholarship Program, and he works as a radio presenter talking about public affairs and community issues on a community radio station. Every Sunday he goes on the air for three hours, providing a forum for community members to discuss issues and hear responses from local leaders. He has also been trying to encourage women to call in and participate so that they will have a bigger role in decision-making within the community.
“My dream is to become an author, to write books, novels and plays to change society,” Eric said.
He credits his education with giving him the tools to help his community.
“It would be hard for me to get to a good radio station without a university degree,” Eric said. “How you frame your issues, how you put it on the air matters a lot.”
In addition to working in radio, Eric teaches communications classes at the Northern Institute of Business Studies in Gulu. Eric graduated from university in 2012. He was one of the original 100 students who joined the Legacy Scholarship Program in 2005.
