Here at Invisible Children, we love Jamie Tworkowski. Seriously. He is the catalyst for some of us to have entered the non-profit sector, a close friend to Jason Russell and personally, his speech from the Fourth Estate Leadership Summit is the reason I get up in the morning. So, it comes as no surprise that I chose Jamie’s TedTalk to be featured this week.
Jamie Tworkowski is the founder of To Write Love on Her Arms (TWOLHA). To Write Love on Her Arms, much like Invisible Children, began with a story. In 2006, Jamie wrote online about his friend Renee who was struggling with depression and addiction. Renee’s story became incredibly popular as so many people found it to be similar to their own. TWOLHA quickly became much more than just a captivating story, but a living and breathing movement. TWOLHA is now a well established non-profit that exists to provide hope to those struggling with depression, self-injury and addiction. It also bridges the gap between encouragement and treatment. We are incredibly confident in the work that Jamie and the team at TWOLHA are doing in our world today.
Jamie recently did a TedTalk that opens up an honest discussion surrounding both depression and desire in our own day to day lives. He poses important thoughts on our struggles, our dreams and the ways in which we approach other people. He even mentions our very own Jason Russell. But most importantly, Jamie leaves us with a very profound and simple thought:
“What if we asked better questions?”
Think people should hear about this?
