Invisible Children is not famous for writing sports-themed blog posts, but since I am the new staff writer (and I have the administrator password to the blog), I am going to give our sports-loving followers something to chew on. Plus, since this blog highlights staff culture and interests, and football interests me, I’m going to run with it.
Aside from the fact that I am a running writer, there are two things you need to know about me: I am female. I love football. I love football like most females love shoes.
We all have our favorite teams & we all have them for different reasons. It could be geographical (for me, Chargers), it could be a crush on the quarterback (my co-worker Monica wants to have Tim Tebow’s babies), it could be stats (the Steelers defense kicked arse this year), or it could be random (the Saints helmets are glittery). Most everyone roots for some team, some time, for some reason.
While all of my small talk is undoubtedly fascinating to you (you had never noticed there was glitter on the Saints helmets, admit it), but none of that is the point of this blog post. This post is about the death of my Superbowl matchup dream between the Greenbay Packers and the New England Patriots.
I wanted it so bad I could taste it. I think they are the two best teams. And the two best teams should play in the Superbowl. My five-year-old son said it best after the Packers loss this past Sunday: “Mom, I am so frustrated. I am freaking out. The Packers are clearly better than the NY Giants.”
All I could say was “Yes, son. Yes.”
It’s as if the Packers didn’t think about me at all in the locker room before the game, and didn’t realize how bad I wanted it. It’s all about me, doesn’t Aaron Rodgers know that? Sigh.
The four remaining teams: Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, New York Giants. Even though I have the power to openly express my unfiltered opinion, I am going to refrain from picking who I think will go to the Superbowl and who will take home the trophy. My dream has been shattered and taken out with yesterday’s trash. But dear friends, I invite you to keep on dreaming. I want to keep you from being bored on Superbowl Sunday. Don’t be bored, people. Enjoy the great American pastime. Root for a team, listen to the commentators banter, eat the nachos, and laugh at the gazillion dollar commercials. Super. Bowl. Is. Super. Fun.
