There is a man named Zac Vawter that only has one human leg. His other leg is part machine, part brain, part science-fiction. Vawter, a 31-year-old amputee, was recently fitted with a bionic leg that can be controlled by his mind. What better way to show off a new leg than to climb every step of a Chicago skyscraper?
While this is wonderful news for Zac, it’s also wonderful news for amputees around the world. Advancements like this are exactly the sort of thing that the world has been waiting for. I can’t begin to imagine the freedom this invention will give to people with limited mobility. My hope is that this sort of technology will soon make its way to areas of the world that have been plagued by war and violence that has caused the loss of limbs. The LRA are notorious for maiming and mutilating limbs and appendages of their victims, while landmines and other undetonated explosives are still taking lives across the globe.
It must have been difficult for Zac to transition to life with his new leg, but he did it. Zac has chosen to move forward with his life, and we applaud him for it. Transitions are always difficult- even when they are positive transitions. As an organization, we have been helping the world transition into a place where warlords lay down their weapons, and where humanity stands up for each other.
Our latest event, MOVE:DC is a part of that global transition, and we want you (scratch that, we need you) to be there.
November 17th might be an inconvenient date. It might require some sacrifices on your part. It might make your friends uncomfortable. But, then again, it might be a pivotal moment in your life. It might be the inspiration you need to change the world in your own unique way. It just might be the best weekend of your life.
Join us. There’s more than enough room for someone dedicated to seeing the world differently.
P.S. The event is handicap friendly & accessible – there will be help provided for those that need it. There will also be an ASL signer at the event. Stop at nothing.
