On days like Valentine’s, when people are more inclined to do a bit more than usual for those around them, it’s easy to fall into the usual routine of treating someone to dinner or baking them cookies. Not that it’s wrong to do so (I love me some frosted sugar cookies) – we just like to step out of the box a bit. Oh, and we’re obsessed with films.
Browsing around the net, I came across a film I saw back in 2010 about a world where robots and humans coexist. Along the way a love story blooms and the rest is sci-fi/social-political history. I thought to myself what a better way to “connect” with people than to stay in and watch a film that presents a new perspective of life through a different kind of love story. We present you with: I’m Here – an online film directed by Spike Jonze.
Spike Jonze – the visionary behind Where the Wild Things Are, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and numerous music videos (not to mention a legendary 6-part interview with M.I.A) – clashes the technology and physical worlds together all in a surreal contemporary Los Angeles setting. In traditional robot-boy-meets-robot-girl story structure (because there’s totally such a thing,) this film is a beautifully captured 30-minute dramedy filled with concert outings, parties, and the various stages of love.
Propelled by it’s strong soundtrack (tunes provided by Animal Collective, Girls, Gui Boirratto, and more) and it’s compelling cinematography, the film artistically captures the emotional essence between the characters and the audience in a way that you forget the story revolves around a made-up world.
P.S. Another reason I’m fond of this film: it was the first time I heard of Sleigh Bells. And then I proceeded to go to their first show in L.A. after hearing about their songs in the film.
