Graphic Designer Kai Krause is changing the world in his own way through his reconstructed map of Africa, with several  non-African countries overlaid within the continent’s borders. His goal is to make a contribution in the fight against immappancy. Krause explains the concept of “immappancy”:

“In addition to the well known social issues of illiteracy and innumeracy, there also should be such a concept as “immappacy,” meaning insufficient geographical knowledge.”

In reality, the continent of Africa is roughly 11.7 million square miles, with a population of just over 1 billion people – 14% of the world’s population. Krause’s map creates a compelling visual by showing that the storied continent can fit the United States, India, Japan, China, and the majority of Europe within its borders.

Unfortunately, the continent of Africa has historically suffered many ill-conceived misperceptions and misrepresentations including this song by Bono and friends. Yes Band Aid, they do know it’s Christmas. Contrary to popular belief, the overall African economy is on the rise and is poised to continue it’s upward trend over the next several years. Many universities and research groups are creating cutting edge technology and in the process, are keeping pace with the likes of the United States and China.

Africa refuses to be defined by it’s stereotypes, and Krause does a a fine job of showing the true size and capabilities of this grand continent.
