Sometimes two is better than one. And when it comes to HR interns, that statement has proven true. Enter Anthony and Nataly. They’re an integral part of our Human Resources Department. They’re masters at balancing work, school, and play. And frankly, they’re just plain fun to be around.

You won’t find any Toby Flendersons in this office. In fact, we like to think we have the best HR department in the world. When they’re not hiring the newest class of interns and Roadies, they’re busy ensuring our employees have the best possible experience in the day-to-day. I recently caught up with this dynamic duo to capture a glimpse into life as HR interns. Here’s what they had to say:

What does a typical day as a Human Resources Intern look like?

Anthony: A typical day for me is working with a great team, interacting with applicants and potential job candidates.

Nataly: Similar to Anthony, I review applicants and candidates for all our staff and  intern positions. We set up interviews with our HR team. I’m also working on various side projects.

What sets your internship apart from others and what impact are you able to make in your specific role?

Anthony: Learning key skills that will transfer into a career in HR. I’m able to set a foundation for future interns.

Nataly: Additionally, we’re working to make our workplace the best environment possible and ensuring that everyone is able to reach their fullest potential within these walls. As interns we’re able to leave a mark on this position after we leave.

What’s one thing that you’ve learned at Invisible Children that you’ll carry with you after your internship is over?

Anthony: The importance of working within a team. No one individual can do everything.

Nataly: I completely agree with Anthony. I also love the community. The fact that so many people can come together for one common mission and goal, regardless of your talents. I’ll carry that with me after my time here.

Anthony: To add on to that, I’ve learned how powerful it is to work for a purpose. If you’re doing what you love, the paycheck will come.

In one sentence, why do you love working for Invisible Children?

Anthony: The work environment, or the “invisible zeal” as I like to call it, is so unique, because you don’t always see the passion but you can always feel it.

Nataly: It’s a fun, creative, and innovative place to work and it pushes the boundaries of what non-profit organizations should look like and it sets a standards for how other organization should achieve their goals.

What advice would you give a future intern?

Nataly: Do your best at work, go above and beyond but be sure to invest in others because this is a lasting community that will impact your life if you allow it to.

Anthony: Enjoy working with others because work is like a second family.

What’s your favorite part about living in San Diego?

Nataly: The beach.

Anthony: I love the weather here. It’s always beautiful.

Invisible Children is all about community. What’s it like working and living with other interns?

Nataly: It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind experience that allows you to work hard and play hard. You’re working with a community that cares so much about the cause but can still come home at the end of the day and invest in each other. These are relationships that will last a lifetime.

Anthony: You see both sides of everyone. When they’re relaxed and when they’re focused on work. You get to build friendships with everyone as well.

What’s been your favorite memory so far?

Nataly: Valentines Day! It turned into a family holiday for all of us and being able to affirm one another, and share a meal and laughs together was so good.

Anthony: This past Friday. It’s the most fun I’ve had since being here. Everyone in the office got together in the warehouse at the end of the day, enjoyed pizza and drinks together, and played some basketball. It was such a good environment.

Anthony, what’s the best thing about working with Nataly?

If I’m not able to do something I know that she can. It’s a good balance. She’s very friendly and helpful. Oh man, there are so many good things.

Nataly, what’s the best thing about working with Anthony?

Seeing his determination to work really hard and do the best that he can. I love learning from his determination.

You’re both in college and taking online courses in addition to this internship. What does balancing both of those workloads look like for you?

Nataly: You’re not able to interact with your professor face-to-face and that can be challenging but  being able to see everything that I’ve learned as a business student fully applied in my internship is incredible.

Anthony: I’m able to apply what I learned in the classroom into a real-world experience. It’s a challenge to not be able to hang out on campus, but it’s worth it.

Great news. We’re looking for inspiring individuals like Anthony and Nataly to join us as our Human Resources Interns this summer. If you would like to learn more about how you can be a part of the team, you can find a full job description and application on our website. The deadline to apply is this Friday, MARCH 15TH.
