As evident by our constant communication about this Australian band The Trouble With Templeton, we’re pretty big fans. We randomly happened upon a solo set by the lead singer Thomas Calder on New York City’s Lower East Side during the annual CMJ Australian BBQ. Our friend Amy who works for CMJ insisted that we hang around the venue for a bit to see her friends play. The band name was long, and we were confused as to when they actually played. Thankfully, we were just meandering by the bar when Tom took the stage.
The resulting set literally stopped us in our tracks and almost literally melted our faces. The lyrics were evocative, the vocals were raw, and the melodies were engaging. We were immediately into it. Thanks, Amy.
When we saw the now five-piece band’s name added to the SXSW lineup, we knew we had to try to do something with them. We were beyond overjoyed when it all worked out and we began shooting them in East Austin at The Owl as part of our SXSW Almost Live Series.
Tom and the group were brilliant enough to do two tracks for us – both off the group’s forthcoming second album. The first was a seriously beautiful, exclusive song featuring a killer three-part harmony entitled “You Are New.” Then Tom and his guitar took on another cut from the record – the current single in the States – “Six Months In A Cast.”
