Invisible Children mentor Betty talks to the students of Pabbo Secondary School during a career guidance session

“I have always dreamt of becoming either a journalist or an accountant and after the career guidance talk at my school, am looking forward to achieving my career goals,” says Bernard of Pabbo Secondary School.

For students such as Bernard, choosing a particular career path from the many options available stands to be a challenge for them, but with career guidance sessions, they are able to acquire vital knowledge to guide them when deciding what path they wish to take and how they can get there.

As a supplement to the guidance that the students receive from their teachers daily, Invisible Children Uganda’s School for Schools program facilitates career guidance sessions in the partner schools. The one at Pabbo SS included input from facilitators such as the Dean of Students Gulu University, a speaker from Straight Talk, a mentor from Invisible Children Uganda and Mr. James Lomoro, a retired Principal Inspector of Schools who spoke to the students.

The facilitators talked about the importance of having a confidant, being disciplined students, having self-confidence, career identification, attitude, how to excel, modes of entry into tertiary institutions, as well as answered questions that arose from their discussion.

“Such talks are important to us, they are a reminder of the main reason as to why we are in school and this is to work for a bright future, “says Barbra whose dream is to become a lawyer so that she can fight injustices.

Schools for Schools’ career guidance sessions in the partner schools aim at supporting students to thrive as they achieve their career dreams.
