Wednesday morning our friends at The Monarch School opened the doors to their brand new campus just down the block from our office, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them in the neighborhood. The mission of the Monarch School is to educate students impacted by homelessness and to help them develop hope for a future with the necessary skills and experiences for personal success.

To welcome them into the new space, the school invited parents, community members, and politicians to join them for a ribbon-cutting ceremony – complete with guest speakers, dancing, and powerful student testimonies.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who spoke at the event, declared April 24th, 2013 as Monarch Day in the city of San Diego. He went on to encourage the students of this unique school:

“The home you have here, the friends that you make here, and the education that you gain here, will stay with you for the rest of your life.”

Students of the school were also recognized during last night’s Padres game and even received a visit from the world-renowned Swinging Friar of San Diego.

Members of our staff recently took part in a 200-mile Ragnar run with members of the Monarch School. Invisible Children is looking forward to continuing to building relationships with these incredible students and teachers and sharing a neighborhood with the school.
