Little known fact about me: I am a cancer survivor. Diagnosed with kidney cancer at the age of 28, I completed treatment and have been in remission for three years. Tying it in a nice little one sentence bow doesn’t quite do my experience justice, but the point of this blog is not about me or my cancer. It is about the organization F*** Cancer and the incredible mission they’re on to save lives through early detection.

As their website puts it – “We’re not scientists and we can’t raise the billions we need to find a cure, but we can teach people how to cure 90% of cancers: find them in stage one. There are tons of amazing organizations seeking the cure; we’ll leave that to them. Early detection is our battle.”

They teach people how to look for cancer, instead of just find it. I am living proof that their theory is correct and early detection can indeed save your life. We’re a generation with incredible technology at our disposal, and F*** Cancer wants to use it to educate through storytelling to change the way people think, talk, and act about cancer.

Through various campaigns, this nonprofit is targeting those with the ever-present “It’ll never happen to me” syndrome. The often funny, sometimes shocking, and always educational campaigns are the catalysts in their relentless attempts to educate the masses about early detection. And if you’re put off at all by the name of their organization, their marketing tools, or their in-your-face tactics, they’re ready to stand behind it, saying, “When you’ve lost your sense of humor, you’ve lost it all.”

And all I’m saying is they included the below stats on their website and reading it rejuvenated my own sense of humor.

We are so excited that F*** Cancer is joining us for the Common Good Exchange at the Fourth Estate Summit this August. You’ll get to meet the people behind the organization and learn firsthand about the incredible work they do to.
