Hefty superlative, right? But trust us. Meet Tyler, and you will realize we are not being too generous.
We befriended sixth grader Tyler Lang earlier this year when Invisible Children staff spoke at his school in Southern California. Tyler continued the conversation with us post-presentation, asking pertinent questions about the LRA conflict and how to ensure its permanent end. It was obvious to us that Tyler’s worldview was borderless. Soon he would prove to be limitless, too.
Now, Tyler is many things: science whiz, amateur kayaker, and handsome. But you would not label him a runner. However, last Saturday when his school hosted a 15k to benefit Invisible Children, Tyler laced up. At the start line, supporters held their breath as Tyler left the gate for his first race. His mom and teachers admired his commitment but assumed they would need to help him off the course early. Tyler felt a responsibility to run because child soldiers are not free to do the same. His conviction fueled his feet, and 9.3 miles later, Tyler crossed the finished line.
Tyler’s pavement pounding translated into over $800 raised for Invisible Children. And now his school plans on generously sponsoring two students so they can attend the Fourth Estate Leadership Summit this August.
And since our friend Tyler is already doing this, we invited him too as a special guest.
If you would like to sponsor a student who would otherwise be unable to attend, you can donate to the Summit Scholarship Fund HERE.
