The Anaka computer lab was commissioned one year ago during a Schools for Schools trip to Uganda. Students from U.S. schools raised money for the refurbishment of a classroom at Anaka Secondary School to transform it into a computer lab with 30 workstations. Now that construction work is complete, Schools for Schools is focusing on providing skills training to teachers that will help them to use the new lab to its fullest potential.
A training was held for teachers from Schools for Schools partner schools with the least exposure to computers so that they could learn basics like Microsoft Office and how to use the internet for research.
“We believe this will help them improve in how they teach, give them exposure to the world that is out there through the internet,” Lorna Peace, Schools for Schools Capacity Building Assistant, said.
“Word, Excel and internet have really kicked off in the school,” said Opiyo Samuel, who teaches computer courses for students in the last two years of secondary at Anaka SS. He said that he has noticed an improvement in typing ability for those teachers who attended the training.
Schools for Schools has provided infrastructure (hardware) projects and staff and student capacity development (software) projects at our partner schools since 2006. Hardware projects focused on renovating and/or building structures such as classroom blocks, latrines, water pumps, libraries, and science laboratories. With the completion of construction projects, Schools for Schools will focus on software projects like teacher and support staff capacity building and career guidance for students. The program currently works with schools in northern Uganda that have been affected by the LRA and is funded by our Fourth Estate Members. Learn more and become a member HERE.
