Dear global supporters,
One of our fellow interns from this past summer has a tattoo of the world on her back. It has no countries, no borders. Only the edges of continents shaped by the oceans around them. When asked why the tattoo has no borders, she smiles and says, “Because we don’t belong to borders. We belong to one another.”
We couldn’t agree more. And while we can’t claim to have the same cool tattoo, we do carry these beliefs to our core. So much so, that we have traveled from across the world – France, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom – to intern and work for Invisible Children in the United States.
Invisible Children has long understood that our generation has the opportunity to redefine the meaning of social justice and set the standard for what it means to be a global citizen. This belief is at the core of our movement – from our films to our action in central Africa and in Washington, DC. In the aftermath of the global phenomenon that was KONY 2012, we at Invisible Children have taken a particular interest in the involvement of our support base from outside the United States. What we have found is that our global supporters have proven to be some of our most tenacious and dedicated activists. From visits to our website and Facebook to attending Fourth Estate Summit and committing to being monthly donors – you have stepped up when we needed you the most.
As your representatives at Invisible Children we wanted to say thank you. We see you, we care about you, and we are incredibly proud to be supported by inspiring individuals who recognize that in the face of ever increasing global connectivity there is a new responsibility to protect each other.
It is not the role of the United States to solve the LRA issue. It is not the role of the United Nations to solve the LRA issue. It is the responsibility of all of us, working together, no matter where we come from, live, or aspire to go.
That’s why we’re writing you today. Recently, we launched our most ambitious fundraising campaign to date. It’s called #zeroLRA. Over the next three months we’re going to stand for nothing – no child soldiers, no killings, no war. And we’re going to celebrate everything – every escape, every name, every life.
Thanks to increased global awareness and action, Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army are weaker than ever before, but they will remain a deadly threat until the group has been disbanded completely – until all the women and children have escaped and all the soldiers have surrendered. Until there are zero LRA.
This fall, we invite you to join us as we fundraise for Invisible Children’s lifesaving programs in central and East Africa. We look forward to getting to know you and celebrating with you when it is all over. Thank you for standing by our side and for believing in us.
Gratefully,
Joanna Matheson, New Zealand, Engagement Manager: Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa
Rebecca Argall, United Kingom, Donor Administration intern – Thank you for your involvement
