Storytellers often find inspiration in the strangest places. For Howard G. Buffett, inspiration came during a talk at a farm-equipment store in Illinois 12 years ago. During the talk, an agriculture expert told the audience that most farmers can expect 40 growing seasons, giving them 40 chances to improve every harvest. This struck a cord with Buffett, who is both an avid farmer and an advocate for an end to hunger worldwide. He took the concept to heart and committed to invest $3 billion over the next 40 years to solve the global food security crisis.
On Tuesday, he released his much anticipated book 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World – which revolves around the lessons learned from his commitment to end global hunger.
In it, he poses the question: If you had the resources to do something great, what would you do? We were inspired and asked our supporters to chime in on Instagram and Twitter with an answer to that question. We got a ton of responses, and we’re so pumped on the idea that we’re taking it a step further and extending the contest.
Here’s the deal:
We want to make this a global contest and get at least 40 countries involved. Take a photo telling us what you would do for your country if you had the resources to do something great. Include “#40Chances” and “#TheNameOfYourCountry” (as in, #Spain or #Ireland), and upload it via Instagram or Twitter.
The first 40 individual country submissions will win a copy of 40 Chances and a prize set from Invisible Children. One overall winner will win a copy of the book, an entire Invisible Children media set, and one of our new tees. The contest will end at noon PST on Sunday, October 27.
If you’ve already posted a picture, you are still eligible for the overall prize. If you want to be eligible for the country prize, post a new answer with what you’d do with unlimited resources for your country.
When you’re done, watch this video and find out how Howard Buffett is helping bring a permanent end to LRA violence.
