As one of our 11 partner schools in northern Uganda, Keyo Secondary School holds a special place in our hearts. As does Keyo’s former head teacher, Ongiya Calistus Nyeko. Calistus, who also participated in Invisible Children’s Reciprocal Teacher Exchange (TrEx), was recently transferred to another school. Calistus joined Keyo in 1999 and was promoted to head teacher three years later.

But, this week was not only about saying goodbye to Calistus. Students and staff of Keyo SS also organized a welcome get together for Michael Labeja, their new head teacher.

Michael Labeja, the new head teacher at Keyo Secondary School.

While we know that Michael has big shoes to fill, Invisible Children is very excited to welcome him. He has significant experience working in education and was previously the deputy head teacher at a secondary school in Kampala. Michael also has many goals for the school’s growth and development.

“Given the history of the school and the infrastructural development that has taken place here thanks to Invisible Children and other development partners, it’s time we played our role on improving the academic performance,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to continuing to improve student performance at Keyo.

As a result of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, Keyo was displaced from its campus for 13 years. When it returned in 2009, Invisible Children helped supported its return through the Schools for Schools program by building and providing materials for three classroom blocks and a science laboratory.

Michael is keen to keep improving on the successes that Calistus had during his time at Keyo.
