Marylyne, a mentor from the Legacy Scholarship Program, unfolded the white piece of paper that Aol Kevin handed to her. She looked on approvingly. Kevin had performed well – receiving marks of good, very good or excellent in almost all of her subjects in the recent school term.
Kevin, a student at Saint Mary’s College Lacor, is ranked as one of the top 20 students in her class. She will be moving to Senior 2 when the new school term starts in February. Marylyne advised Kevin to review her notes from her coursework throughout the rest of her vacation so is she prepared for start of term assessments.
Kevin’s parents are hopeful for her success in school. As a diligent student, she has already proven to be dedicated to her studies. They hope that she can work to a level where she can be self reliant and also able to support her siblings. They aim to work hard to provide her with resources for any additional materials she needs for school, hoping that this will instill confidence in her so she will keep working hard.
According to Kevin’s father, the scholarship Kevin receives from Invisible Children is the only reason she is able to stay in school. Without it, they would not be able to afford school fees.
“If she were not taken up in program, she could not study. We are supporting and guiding her and she is very focused to work harder and achieve in her life,” he said, adding that, without support to attend school, Kevin might have gotten married at a very young age and been unable to achieve her goals of higher education.
When asked what she wants to do in the future, Kevin thinks she would like to be a nurse.
“I see so many people in the hospital,” she said. “It’s a great thing to save lives.”
And while Kevin doesn’t have to make up her mind just yet, Marylyne is very supportive of the fact that Kevin has something of a goal in mind for the future.
“It’s a step forward and becomes a guiding force to have a target,” she said. “Also, when [the student] thinks of a reason why they want to do something it helps them focus on certain subjects. We can also share the ethics and expectations that might come in that area to guide them.”
