Here at Invisible Children, we’re used to crazy. Especially when it comes to fundraising. We’ve thrown up, locked a man in a cage, and dunk tanked our CEO– all for the love of the cause. However, our supporters never cease to amaze us with all of the fearless and unusual fundraisers they plan. In 2013 alone, thousands of activists raised over a million dollars to see an end to Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army.
Meet Hannah Crowder– one of those amazing activists. Hannah is a Canadian, a college student and the most athletic ‘non-athlete’ we’ve ever met. Hannah, inspired by the one and only Jedidiah Jenkins, decided that her fundraising plan for #zeroLRA would consist of her biking across Canada. Let me explain. Hannah pledged that for every $1 that was donated she would ride her bike one kilometer (that’s a little more than half a mile, for all you non-metric users out there). Hannah originally wanted to raise $2,000 which would have sent her biking through the western provinces of Canada. Naturally, she way exceeded that goal, ultimately raising over $10,000 and as a result she will instead be biking from coast to coast. As if that wasn’t enough, Hannah is turning her fundraiser into another fundraiser (#fundraising-inception). Meaning, she’ll be continuing her efforts to raise funds for Invisible Children and will be raising awareness along the way. It’s safe to say we’re obsessed with her.
So, here’s the deal. Hannah will be leaving for her bike trip this summer. Hannah will be starting her journey in Comox, British Columbia and ending it in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’ll take her roughly eight weeks to complete the trek which is quite a long time to be on the road. However, she won’t be alone. Hannah will be accompanied by Invisible Children Alumni, Fourth Estate Summit participants, and anyone who wants join her. Additionally, she will be looking for host homes along the way (future roadie, much?).
“I am most excited to see the country slowly. Following Jed on Instagram, reading his updates, and having the chance to talk to him during the last livestream, he’s really imparted the joy of slow travel, of seeing things in a new way, and of meeting and experiencing people instead of just passing them by.”
Think people should hear about this?
