Butter knives: they are no longer just for smearing cream cheese on your bagel or cutting your sandwich in half.
Now, they are works of art. And they are supporting our on-the-ground programming in Uganda, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Before you write me off as crazy, listen up. And trust me, you’re going to want to hear this story.
Liesel Krouse is an 8-year-old Invisible Children rockstar from Baltimore, Maryland. When Liesel saw our first documentary, The Rough Cut, she was moved by the story of the invisible children and decided that she wanted to make a difference. And she has.
Just a few months ago, she began learning a trade from her father: welding. Now, she creates metal art dragonflies using recycled pieces and supplies provided through her father’s metal art and design shop. She’s created her own website and online store with 100% of the profits supporting Invisible Children’s life-saving programs.
Liesel’s story would be incomplete without mentioning the influence and support of her father, Jon. He became involved with Invisible Children in 2008 after meeting a former child soldier named Peter. Although he was a part of a different rebel group in a different country, his journey is much like many former-LRA stories. Peter found his way from a rebel group to a refugee camp to the United States. His story inspired Jon, and together they attended Invisible Children’s event The Rescue in 2009.
Since then, Jon, Liesel, and the entire Krouse family have supported Invisible Children by hosting screenings at their church, letting Roadies crash at their house, and now through Liesel’s creations.
Liesel is a shining example of our supporters’ creativity and dedication. At 8 years old, she is making a huge difference for not only our organization but for the world. We can’t wait to see what she does next!
