Here’s a call to action. The world is sleepily waking up to the horrendous crisis occurring in the Central African Republic (CAR). Invisible Children cares deeply – not just as global citizens, but as the colleagues, friends, and family of those who are grieving and suffering because of the violence.

Despite positive signs in recent weeks, such as the election of a new interim president, the presence of an African Union led peace-keeping forces, and the deployment of French forces, the situation continues to deteriorate. The actions taken so far by the international community have been insufficient to quell the atrocities being committed.

Both Christians and Muslims have been the victims of violence in the Central African Republic

Our friends at Amnesty International are asking the African Union to fully deploy their peace-keeping forces beyond the capital Bangui and for them to be resourced to operate effectively in order to protect civilians in the Central African Republic. Amnesty International’s Senior Crisis Advisor Donatella Rovera comments:

“The peacekeeping forces have had an effect where they are deployed, but there are large swathes of the North West where there is a notable absence. Here towns have been attacked and there is a real risk of further atrocities,”

The African Union (AU) summit is being held from now until January 31. We’re asking you to use this opportunity and your social media voice to call on the AU to take the necessary action to protect CAR’s civilians. Here’s what to do:

Tweet @_AfricanUnion with the hashtag #DlaminiZuma (that’s Madam Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission) asking them to take action.

For example: @_AfricanUnion. AU must prevent further atrocities everywhere in the Central African Republic #CARcrisis #DlaminiZuma

We’ve seen how powerful it can be when we pair your collective voices on social media with strategic lobbying efforts inside Washington, DC  (#kerrystopkony, anyone? See slide three of our year in review). So raise your voices now, and let’s see what happens this time.
