There is a community in northern Uganda where, before a few months ago, few women had received university degrees. And, before now, no Muslim woman had received a university degree either.

Enter Zainab Akello, a recent graduate of Kampala International University and Invisible Children’s Legacy Scholarship Program (LSP).

Zainab has spent the last three years working hard to achieve her degree in order to become a pharmacist. She also shared that she received a special certificate after graduating as the highest performing student in her program.

“When Invisible Children gave me the scholarship they gave me hope that I would finish school,” she said. “I have come to realize my dream. All along I wanted to be a graduate and a professional.”

Zainab will continue her professional development with a medical internship that will prepare her for her future career. This program is supported by the government of Uganda and, after her successful completion, Zainab will be able to register as a pharmacist.

“It helps us get to know the profession,” she explained.

At Invisible Children, we are incredibly proud of Zainab’s successes. While she believes that she would not be where she is today without the help of Invisible Children, we also believe that students like her have brought us to where we are today.

The opportunity to get to know the future of Uganda’s leading professionals keeps us going and motivated to continue supporting recovery projects in LRA-affected regions.
