The Jane Doze, the neon duo up there looking happily ravey, are a New York City-based DJ twosome known for their mash-ups. They are just some of the incredible talent that are performing next week during MOVE:DC’s Global Dance Night.
Their first mixtape GIRLS TALK is available fo’ free on their website. Download that and begin preparing for their set at the link [HERE].
We reached out to them with several questions regarding their tunes, live shows, and music in social movements.
How do you go about deciding what songs to mash-up – do you go for the commercial tracks or the personal jams or both?
Definitely both – we’ve used everything from The Naked and Famous (an indie favorite) to Katy Perry (about as mainstream and you can get…but still a favorite). Sometimes what we read and see via social media inspires our work; creating musical harmony out of a public controversy or dispute. Other times, we’ll hear an instrumental or acapella and know we HAVE to do something with it – it inspires us, reminds us of something.
I was sold on you two when I saw that you had “Hummingbird Heartbeat” by Katy Perry, a criminally overlooked gem, in a mash-up. What do you think is the most underrated pop song of 2012?
It wasn’t released in 2012 but Robyn’s album Body Talk is filled with underrated pop gold. Nothing can touch her melodies and harmonies.
What makes you most excited about MOVE:DC?
We’re honored and thrilled to be a part of such a huge movement and great cause. We can’t wait to see all 10,000 supporters come together and dance.
What can you expect from your live set? Be aware – our supporters have been known to go quite crazy over a dance party.
Good to hear that. We like to mix pop and EDM. No artist is off-limits…trust us, we’ll have you singing along to Justin Bieber.
What are your thoughts on music as fuel for social change?
Music has the ability to transcend political affiliation and socio-economic issues and speak to a greater cause. In this way it unites people who may otherwise be divided – a movement for change may begin with one person; strengthens as more join the cause.
What are your top three go-to motivational anthems?
1. Don’t You Worry Child (Swedish House Mafia)
3. Don’t F****** Tell Me What To Do (Robyn)
