The xx have redefined minimalism very successfully. The British indie pop act began their subtly-expanding world dominance in 2009 with the release of their debut record xx, receiving immense critical acclaim including the coveted Mercury Prize. Following that, the band’s profile rocketed and resulted in a worldwide tour. After a minor break, the now trio took to London to open their own studio to work on a follow-up album, each writing separately before bringing all the pieces together.
The subsequent album Coexist is out this week, and it’s a guarantee on my year-end list. It’s the perfect continuation of where 2009’s record left off – a mature, older brother of an album. Jamie xx’s production is as unique as ever – it’s evident why Drake recruited him to produce his Rihanna collab “Take Care.”
Coexist, like its predecessor xx, is an album that requires, deserves, and welcomes looped listens, and I am more than happy to do so.
