For an hour today I successfully unglued my eyes from multiple screens of live London Olympics streams to watch a documentary from Coca-Cola about the making of their Olympics song “Anywhere In The World” by producer/guitarist/DJ-wonderchild Mark Ronson and hip-hop/soul/pop/grime amalgam Katy B.
Coca-Cola is no stranger to capitalizing on a good worldwide sport competition – you might remember their utter takeover of the last World Cup with K’naan’s track “Wavin’ Flag.”
For their attempt this year, Coca-Cola + Ronson flew around the globe to record several Olympic hopefuls in the action of their sport – a boxer’s shouts as she kicks her opponent, an archer’s arrow as it thuds into the bullseye, a runner’s heartbeat as she speeds on the track, etc. The recorded bits were then mixed with the typical Ronson synths and constructed into an instrumental for melody-maven Katy B to write over.
The resulting track – “Anywhere In The World” is a sonic assault about the universal language of sport + music. Definitely worthy of the gold [sporting pun].
