Tell me you’ve heard of Rookiemag.com. It was started a year ago by a young beauty named Tavi Gevinson. Yes, her name is as cool as her website. I first found out about her when I watched her TED talk from the TEDxTeen conference this year, and ever since I’ve been blown away by this girl. She works harder than any sixteen-year-old should, and she is all about girl power (#SpiceGirls). Her online magazine started with fashion, but has evolved into so much more than shoes and skirts. This mag is a comfortable place for girls to get & give advice, and the mag takes story ideas from their loyal followers. And by loyal, I mean anyone who ever visits her site because you’ll most definitely be going back for a second, third, fourth, and so on.

Did I mention that she just published her first book? It’s called Rookie Yearbook One. It’s a collection of stories, interviews, photos, and more from Rookie’s first year in print. While it might look like a coffee table book for teens, it’s actually a step-by-step guide on how to be a teenage human in our world today. One page will tell you exactly what you should be listening to around Halloween, and on another it gives you ways to deal with your boyfriend dumping you. And sure, these things can seem unoriginal and overused to some, but Tavi and the writers for Rookie come up with simple topics, and then they ask their readers to respond with writing samples and ideas.

For example, this month the topic is drama. People have been sending in articles about drama between friends, drama clubs at their schools, and even their favorite dramatic artists. It has been really fun scoping the site to see what teens are into these days, and seeing that there is a safe place for them to express themselves is even cooler. My suggestion: check it out. Even if you’re not a teenage girl, there is something to be learned about funny illustrations, flower crowns, and good taste.

Oh, and get to know Tavi even more in the video below. Her TED talk is just a sneak peek into how charismatic she really is.
