This is the ideal situation: Our Roadies screen our new film MOVE, talk about our upcoming historical event MOVE:DC, answer any questions, give breakout sessions on youth activism, and just generally hang out with students to have quality time.

This all successfully played out recently when our Great Lakes Roadie team went to Fruitport High School in Fruitport, Michigan. After hosting three presentations in the morning, the team (photographed above looking deceptively odd), had some ultimate hangout times with the 800-900 students. More than 200 of the school population signed up for more information about MOVE:DC, crashing the team’s Internet (a good thing).

A group of forty students gathered with our Roadie team after school to strategize on how they were going to get to MOVE:DC, and now they’re fundraising wizards. They settled on two solid ideas to collect money to pay for a bus to take them to Washington D.C. The first is to sell slips of paper for $1 to form a “Chain of Love” to hang in the school. Roadie Mary Nume always talks about this “Chain of Love” and how it connects everyone (not to be confused with this.) The second idea is to stage a Minute To Win It, a clutch money-making foray where students have one minute to put as much money in containers as they can. We’ve seen schools raise thousands over the course of those sixty seconds.

Usually at Fruitport High School, a bus field trip takes a month to get approved. Enter Ms. Amy Dixon – the compassionate teacher who spoke to the superintendent of the school district to get the MOVE:DC trip to be added as an exception.

The Fruitport population will be joining all of the other attendees from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana in rocking something Screamin’ Green (that’s a color) so they can easily find their regional pals.

This one goes out to you, Fruitport:
