I spent most of Saturday afternoon at the beach – the perks of living in San Diego – and couldn’t help but notice an abundance of classic VW vans and microbuses lining the streets in front of the modest beachfront bungalows. They are, of course, a surfer’s best friend and a California classic. Admittedly, I had the strongest desire to spend a summer road tripping in one during my high school years. Instead I decided to do this for five months. Clearly the better choice.

According to Car and Driver, Volkswagen is expected to unveil an updated version of its classic Microbus design at the beginning of this summer, with production expected to begin in early 2014. Much like the redesigned Beetle and redesigned-redesigned Beetle, the Microbus is expected to be a huge seller in the U.S.

The concept was originally presented in 2001 but the idea never came to fruition. The new Microbus is expected to be roomy enough to seat six passengers and will include a removable iPad in the center console, which will act as the vehicle’s media and navigation center.

While it’s not your parent’s VW van, it’s sure to make a splash (beach joke) in the auto market when it’s unveiled in the coming months. Too bad this one doesn’t have a fold-down bed and a camping stove, but hey, an iPad’s pretty cool right?
