A ceremony was held to honor 91 Legacy Scholarship Program university graduates who successfully completed their studies in the fields of science, arts and business studies from different universities and technical institutions around Uganda. During the ceremony, students shared their innermost joy blended with life’s true testimonies of their struggles in achieving a good education.
For many of these students it has not been a rosy journey, with some of them orphaned or struggling to stay in school due to lack of tuition and many other aftereffects that came as a result of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict in northern Uganda.
Moses, a beneficiary of the Legacy Scholarship Program and now a graduate from Mbarara University of Science and Technology with a degree in business administration, could not conceal his excitement. “It has been a challenging journey but my life completely changed in 2005 when Invisible Children took me up into the scholarship program. Since then I have been self-driven. These three words have guided me; vision, imagination and hard work. I now hope to aim higher and complete my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) course,” he says.
Moses and his fellow graduates did not give their past misfortunes a chance to consume their lives or determine their future. They worked hard, and their hard work finally paid off as they graduated.
Several speakers at the graduation ceremony called upon the students to be humble and support their communities, following the example of Simon, a former Legacy Scholarship Program beneficiary and now an employee of Barclay’s Bank. Simon currently supports eight people in school, including himself as he continues in his studies. He says that he is motivated to support others through school because of what Invisible Children Uganda did for him.
