Three cool things about my recent trip to Uganda:
1. Seeing Invisible Children Uganda’s recovery programs in all their 3D glory.
2. Sleeping under a mosquito net and feeling like I had a fairy princess bed (finally!)
3. Touring the 31 Bits compound and getting to see the behind-the-scenes action of their jewelry making. Seeing the hard work put into each piece was as inspiring as it was colorful.
Everything in their collection is made out of 100% recycled paper by women in northern Uganda. These internally displaced women are given an opportunity to counter poverty through their employment – they are able to earn an instant income, providing homes, food, and education for their families. 31 Bits also supports their 108 employees by providing literacy education, financial and vocational training, and holistic care.
We have been lucky enough to partner with them over the years and feature some of their one-of-a-kind jewelry on our online store. Right now our Mother’s Day collection features a necklace and bracelet from 31 Bits that are delicate and lovely and wrapped and ready for my own mother (here’s to hoping she doesn’t read this).
We are honored that they’re going to be part of the Common Good Exchange at the Fourth Estate Leadership Summit in August. Dozens of top brands will be under one roof to mingle with attendees and show how they’re making a living and a difference at the same time.
