If you know me at all, you know that I am a little bit obsessed with The Civil Wars. The band, not the actual war. Since the release of their debut album Barton Hollow in 2011, this Nashville-based duo has made major waves in the music industry winning two Grammys in 2012. In November, they announced a “temporary hiatus” due to “irreconcilable differences” and I for one have been anxiously awaiting any glimpse of new music.

Well, the time has come. Last Tuesday, they released the first single off their sophomore effort due out in August. I personally have had this song on repeat since its release and I won’t apologize for it.

The One That Got Away” is a hauntingly beautiful tale of a love affair gone awry. A reflection of a relationship that you wish never happened. Battling emotions of anger, sadness, and a hint of regret. This one gives Adele some solid competition. I’m not sure if it is the strong guitar and drum beats, the raw lyricism, or the powerful yet soft vocals of Joy Williams, but I had the chills through the entire song. You can feel her pain as she sings and can almost hear her voice shake as she gets into the thick of the song. In a letter to fans, vocalist, Joy Williams wrote “I hope you feel the heart in each song, that it might connect with yours.” Well Joy, I assure you that we can.
