The Schools for Schools team recently handed over several finished buildings to the authorities at Awere Secondary School. During the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, the school was displaced and by the time it was safe to return they had only an empty shell of a structure for classrooms. Everything else had been completely destroyed.

Schools for Schools partnered with the school to help reinforce educational quality by providing textbooks and reference books for the library, sports and art equipment, teacher trainings, an emotional literacy curriculum, and numerous construction projects to provide a more stable learning environment for the students of Awere SS. The most recent projects to be handed over to the school were a girls’ dormitory and three duplex teacher houses.

“I cannot picture Awere SS without what Invisible Children has done for this school,” the head teacher said at the ceremony. “I request students to take good responsibility of what has been put in place, to benefit those that come after you.”

Joyce Akello, the senior woman teacher of the school, said that it had been a challenge for her to be present and involved with the girl students since she was living off-campus. “I am going to be more available for the students since I will be a staying at one of the teacher houses,” she said.

Other teachers shared their plans for after they move into the new teacher houses.  They will be able supervise students better and also improve the performance of students through extra lessons that they will now have time to add to their schedules.

Schools for Schools is also enhancing the greater presence of teachers at the school by conducting leadership trainings with the faculty. So far this year, 28 school administrators at the 11 partner schools have undergone the training, which equips them to be better managers of teachers and students.

The Schools for Schools program builds and renovates school structures while also improving the school’s educational climate through career guidance, curriculum, and teacher training. The program currently works with schools in northern Uganda that have been affected by the LRA and is funded by our Fourth Estate Members. Learn more and become one HERE.
