After sitting for his Primary Leaving Exam (PLE), Otim Daniel Comboni was not quite sure if he would be able to attend secondary school.

“I prayed hard that I would be taken up by some organization and fortunately, Invisible Children selected me,” he said.

Many students have to drop out of school after completing primary school because they cannot afford the school fees. Sometimes they repeat Primary 7 multiple times in a row, but in many cases the students will drop out all together.

Daniel joined the Legacy Scholarship Program in 2012, one of the most competitive years for entry into the program. In the subsequent years, he has taken advantage of the opportunities that his secondary school has given him to pursue chemistry, math and technical drawing courses in order to become a mechanical engineer in the future.

Daniel also likes to set an example for his younger siblings and community members. Because he values education, Daniel hopes that the younger ones will feel the same way.

“Back when I was in primary, I was a hardworking boy and my mom knew that. Whenever I am home, she compares me to the others and says ‘Look at your older brother and work hard like him,’” he said. “I try to give advice to the people with whom I live. If I see them misbehaving, I say they should stop that bad behavior and concentrate.”

Concentration is key, he adds, and can lead to higher success rates.

We believe education is the best way to rebuild the future for LRA-affected communities. Contribute to our Legacy Scholarships to empower students like Daniel to continue their education and fulfill their potential.
