It’s almost one of our favorite days of the year — #GivingTuesday, a global day for giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Every year, on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, communities and organizations from all over the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. It’s a day that truly embodies our belief that Our Liberty is Bound Together.

Last year, on #GivingTuesday, you helped us raise $10,000 in one day to help central African leaders unlock their solutions for peace. That single day of giving has impacted every day since then. Thanks to you, we’ve been able to use the funds raised during 2016 #GivingTuesday to drive impact in isolated communities. “How?”, you ask. Well, let us tell you.

We’re training local Early Warning Radio Network operators throughout central Africa.

Thanks to your support, dozens of remote and vulnerable communities across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR) are connected to one another and to the outside world by our Early Warning Radio Network. Through the Network, members of these communities are able to contact each other when armed groups are nearby or when other crises arise. Beyond simply installing the equipment needed for this communication to be possible, we also work closely with local leaders to train them on how to manage the radios and report information safely and accurately. Your support on #GivingTuesday has helped us train these Early Warning Radio operators so that they can make their communities safer every day.

We’re helping stop illegal wildlife trafficking that brings violence to local communities.

Central Africa is home to some of our world’s most magnificent and abundant wildlife but it’s also one of the most isolated and unprotected corners of the world. This creates a dangerous combination that often attracts criminal wildlife traffickers who, as they devastate local wildlife populations, also target local communities with violence. Last Fall, we met with central African leaders and global experts to discuss the ways we could all work together to stop illegal wildlife trafficking and make communities and their environment safer. Thanks to your #GivingTuesday donations, we’re putting those plans into action by expanding our Early Warning Radio Network to areas hardest hit by wildlife trafficking and training local communities on how they can help report and prevent poaching and related violence against their families.

We’re equipping local FM radio stations to bring messages of peace and healing to thousands.

In central Africa, FM radio is a powerful tool for connecting remote communities with limited infrastructure. Thanks to your #GivingTuesday support, we’re teaming up with local radio stations to build, repair, and expand the coverage of radio towers, train local journalists, and record and broadcast messages that promote peace, nonviolence, and healing. Through FM radio, we’re able to provide thousands with access to information that helps make them safer.

Your support last year on #GivingTuesday has helped make all of this and so much more possible in 2017. So, we’re excited for you to join us again this year, as we celebrate this day dedicated to giving that changes every day for families in central Africa. Make sure to mark your calendars now for #GivingTuesday on November 28th and celebrate with us. But of course, you don’t have to wait until then to join us in changing lives.
