Announcing Together, For the Mothers, a campaign to raise $10,000 by Mother’s Day to directly fund holistic care and the return home of mothers and children who recently escaped from Joseph Kony’s rebel army.

Twenty-two women and children recently escaped from Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). While every escape from the LRA is a miracle, this one is particularly remarkable.

These women and children were held captive by Joseph Kony himself and comprised a significant portion of his inner circle, which has been hiding in a remote region at the border of the Central African Republic (CAR) and Sudan. Several of the women were abducted as young girls and have lived under Kony’s direct control for more than a decade.

They have survived years of sexual violence from Kony and other LRA commanders, eventually giving birth to children while in captivity. Despite it all, they never gave up hope for freedom – for themselves and their children.

Kony is known to kill those who attempt to escape or even those he suspects of considering escape. This fear keeps many trapped within the LRA.

But this is a story of a mother’s love overcoming her fears. 

These brave, defiant mothers planned an escape. When Kony’s camp was attacked by another armed group, they used the chaos to flee with their children and some other captives. Together, they walked for several days until they reached a remote Central African community that took them in and contacted Invisible Children.

All 22 women and children are now safe in our care, and we are working hard to locate their families across multiple countries to help get them home.

These extraordinary mothers overcame the unimaginable to give their children a chance at freedom. Now, it’s our chance to give them urgently-needed care, get them home to their families, and help them start their journey of healing.

100% of every donation will directly fund their safe shelter, meals, basic necessities, and trauma healing support while we locate their families. This fund also covers the costs of getting them home and settled in their communities.
