Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so we’re mixing it up with some sad songs to remind you to celebrate the love you’ve found. And if you haven’t, this playlist will probably hit home, so make sure to treat yourself this week, you deserve it.

01. Now, Now – Colony :: I first heard (read as: fell madly in love with) Now, Now back when they toured with Kevin Devine in the Fall. Subsequently, I’ve been singing along (out of key) ever since. A blend of coolness and heartache, this song sets the tone for this mix tape. I see you sad girls, I see you.

02. Sharon Van Etten – Give Out :: The sorrow in Sharon Van Etten’s voice does not distract from how beautiful it sounds, rather, it contributes to it. For best results, stare outside a rainy window while listening.

03. Daughter – Landfill :: If it looks like I’m crying while I’m listening to this song, it’s because I’m am I have allergies. This song begins in pain and steadily builds into indignation. Reminding us that there is liberation in heartache. Or, sadness.. ..lots of sadness.

04. Karen O – The Moon Song :: This warm track is an outstretched hand to those feeling a little dispirited. Although it may not be as sad as the other songs, I included it because the movie ‘Her’ affected my ability to feel love.

05. London Grammar – Metal & Dust :: A showcase of talent, this song is a prime example of blending strength and distress. Straight up beautiful. London Grammar, we should grow old together.

06. Kyla La Grange – To Be Torn :: What’s that? This “Sad Girl” mixtape wasn’t sad enough? Well, prepare to be devastated. Powerful and delicate, Kyla La Grange’s voice is a hammer and chisel etching the feels into your heart.
